Although John and Nelda Braswell had been neighbors with Clyde Ledbetter for more than 20 years, they didn't truly begin to know him until about 10 years ago, when he and his wife, Becky, decided to tear down their privacy fence.

Since then, the two couples have shared just about everything, including tools, food and plenty of fond memories.

The Braswells recently wrote a letter to the Southeast Missourian in which they referred to their neighbors as "a blessing." They said they decided to write the letter after the Ledbetters parked their motor home at a local hospital for three weeks to accommodate their neighbors' out-of-town relatives who were visiting the hospital daily.

Wrote the Braswells: "They share Sophie, their friendly Shelty dog, and Squeeky their cat. We share tools for repair work, and now and then when we are not looking, they mow our lawn and shovel snow. We all appreciate the friendship and generosity of the Ledbetters and look forward to many more years as neighbors."

The Ledbetters said they don't mind helping out because the families have developed good relationships and live in such close proximity. Since Clyde's retirement May 1, those relationships are growing even closer, said Becky.

"We took the fence down and everybody retired, and then we had time to talk," said Becky as she shared a hug with Nelda. "They're just great people."

Clyde said he and John have been working more in "their" workshop together lately, but now it's time for John to learn a little something about fishing.

"Fishing's top of the list," he said with a grin. "I'm going to get him out there yet."

John, in true good neighbor fashion, smiled and tapped his cane on the ground. "As soon as I get my leg together I'm going," he said. "Might as well share that, too."
