JACKSON - A Jackson native is making plans to break a world record in water skiiing. Larry Gohn of Winter Haven, Fla., plans to ski for more than 46 hours and 1,321 miles in late May. He hopes to raise money for a number of groups including the American Heart Association.
Gohn grew up in Jackson, and graduated from Jackson High School in 1979. He moved south about four years ago to further his skiing abilities.
He is the son of David and Glenda Gohn of Jackson. His brother, Greg, and sister, Robyn, also reside in Jackson.
Gohn will have to complete more than 440 laps around a roughly three-mile course on Lake Howard, said his coach Brian Lamb.
Gohn is taking his training pretty seriously, skiing at least two hours every day and more on the weekends. Outside the water, he is undergoing aerobic training for endurance and calisthenics for strength several more hours each day, said his coach.
In addition to a fund-raising attempt, his effort will also be an official try for inclusion in the Guinness record book.
The water-skiing distance record is currently held by Steve Fontaine of Lake Park, according to the Guinness Book. He skied 1,321.16 miles in 46:3:42 on Oct. 24-25, 1988.
Gohn works as a designer at a flower and furniture shop. His wife, Diane, is an aerobics instructor. They have a 20-month-old son, David.
