From nightgowns to ball gowns, the clothes of the 1840s to the 1890s differ from today's. On Tuesday, as part of Historic Preservation Week, the Glenn House will contain a self-guided tour of a display of vintage clothes.
The tour, sponsored by the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau Inc., will be open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will feature a buffet lunch. Adele Kupchella, event chairwoman, said visitors may come and go anytime during the tour hours.
People may have lunch in the dining room or on the front porch. She said, "Fashions will be on mannequins and signs will be placed next to the clothing describing them."
Five students of Dr. Paula King, chair of the department of human environmental studies at Southeast, dressed the mannequins as part of their display design class.
Clothes will be grouped by type in various rooms. One bedroom has a collection of Victorian lingerie, corsets and petticoats. Other rooms have men's and children's clothes and accessories.
Natalia Johnson, a fashion merchandising student, enjoyed dressing the mannequins. "I like working with the vintage clothing. It is like a history lesson for me," she said. "Working with clothing of the past helps me work with the clothing of the future."
