Glenallen man charged in DWI accident that injured Jackson woman

A Glenallen man is facing felony assault charges that say alcohol was a factor in an automobile crash that ended with a Jackson woman being taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

Prosecutors charged Michael C. Woods, 31, on Tuesday with one count of second-degree assault by operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The charge rises to a felony, prosecutors say, because Woods' inebriated state made him criminally negligent when he failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of East Jackson Boulevard and Donna Drive and hit another car.

Following the collision, the driver told police that she had pain in her neck and left shoulder, which was severe enough that she was treated at a hospital. A passenger told Angle the other car had "zoomed through" the intersection as they were making a left turn when it hit them.

Police said Woods failed a sobriety test. Urine analyses and a breath chemical test showed Woods to be well over the legal limit, police said.

Woods, on probation for a prior DWI, is facing up to seven years in prison if convicted. An arraignment has been set before Judge William Syler on Nov. 19.
