The Gold Award, the highest recognition given to a Girl Scout, will be awarded to 22 girls at First General Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau Sunday.
To achieve this honor, girls are required to achieve the leadership award, career exploration pin, give service, earn at least four interest patches and complete the Senior Girl Scout Challenge. Each girl also designed and carried out her own Gold Award project.
Also to be honored at the ceremony are 40 graduating senior Girl Scouts; 49 Cadette Girl Scouts will receive the Silver Award which is the second highest award in Girl Scouting.
Elks Lodge #639 of Cape Girardeau purchases the Gold and Silver Award pins.
Deidra Jewel will be the guest speaker for the event. Jewel, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Don Jewel of Cape Girardeau, is a former Gold Award Girl Scout and a recent graduate of the University of Missouri Law School at Columbia.
Recipients of this year's Gold Award:
Christy Etherington, of Troop 43, is the daughter of Rick and Prill Etherington. She is a senior at Jackson High School. She is National Honor Society president, Student Council secretary, co-captain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FBLA secretary, and student editor of the Squawler. She was an assistant soccer coach for a 7th and 8th grade team as her Gold Award project.
Carrie Heise, a member of troop 43, created, taught, and performed choreography for the Girardot Rose Chorus as her Gold Award project. She is a member of SADD, Spanish Club, Girls Chorus, Symphonic Band, Honor Roll, Spear-it captain, and soccer. She is the daughter of Wayne and Kathy Heise of Jackson.
Troop 43 leaders are Prill Etherington and Kathy Heise.
Rebecca Abernathy, daughter of Richard and Nona Abernathy of Jackson, is a member of FBLA, SADD, Spanish Club, Pep Club, marching and symphonic band, and is active in Explorer Post 4077. As a Girl Scout, she attended the Martin Luther King convention in Washington, D.C. and an international wider opportunity in Puni, India.
Jennifer Campbell, daughter of Richard and Debbie Campbell of Jackson, chaired the Brownie Fall Frolics for her Gold Award project. She is active in FHA, FBLA, National Honor Society, SADD, drama, French Club and her church youth group. She attended a Wider Opportunity Girl Scout program in North Carolina.
Troop 164 leaders are Nona Abernathy and Deborah Campbell.
Nichole Jones of Anna, Ill. is the daughter of Dale and Linda Jones and a member of Troop 171. Linda Jones is her leader. Jones' Gold Award project was chairing Shawnee Service Unit's Day Camp. Her troop traveled to Savannah, Ga.
Fourteen girls from Troop 172 of Perryville will receive their Gold Award. Their leaders are Evelyn Rehagen and Darlene Kiefer.
Sarah Caldejon, daughter of Emiliano and Nancy Caldejon, is a member of varsity band, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Club, and the Honor Roll. For her Gold Award project, she gathered information from microfilm and from former and present Girl Scout members to create a book entitled "A History of Girl Scouting in Perry County 1943 to Present."
Collecting personal care items from the community to help the needy was the Gold Award project of Julie Gebhardt. She is the daughter of Ronald and Joan Gebhardt of Perryville. Her school activities include volleyball, basketball, softball, pep club, Sodality, SADD, Stuco and National Honor Society.
Clarissa Hager, daughter of William and Clara Hager of Perryille, made banners with the Girl Scout Promise and Law for Mass and helped organize Girl Scout Sunday Mass. Her school activities include SADD, Sodality, National Honor Society, Quill & Scroll, yearbook, Pep Club, and Flag Corps.
Erin Kiefer of Perryville is the daughter of Daniel and Darlene Kiefer. She organized and conducted Perryville's Junior Day Camp in 1994. Her memberships include Friends of Education, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society, and Lutheran Youth Fellowship.
Angela Kirn, daughter of Terry and Mary Kirn of Perryville, attends St. Vincent High School where she is active in SADD, Sodality, band, VICA, and Stuco. She is a member of Who's Who Among High School Students. Her Gold Award project was to compose a booklet of community activities for her city to take to competitions.
Amanda Kutz of Perryville is the daughter of Walter Jr. and Linda Kutz. Her activities include National Honor Society, Sodality, SADD, and editor of the school yearbook. She has attended Missouri Girls State. Her Gold Award project was to hold an overnight lock-in at the school gym for the SADD chapter.
Angela L'Hote, daughter of Rick and Audrey L'Hote of Perryville, belongs to FBLA, National Honor Society and Senior Advisory Committee. She has been a member of Who's Who among High School Students for four years.
Painting a map of the United States at the Lutheran School in Perryville was the Gold Award project of Vicki Peters. Her parents are Danny Peters and Linda Blechle of Perryville. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, SADD, and has qualified for honor roll.
Kara Rehagen is the daughter of Conrad and Evelyn Rehagen of Perryville. Her activities include SADD, Sodality, basketball, volleyball, yearbook staff, homecoming queen, Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Award, Who's Who Among High School Students and soccer. She painted a map of the United States on St. Vincent's grade school playground for her Gold Award project.
Jamie Sandler, daughter of Mark and Cindy Sandler, planted jonquils in a 25-foot diameter of the Girl Scout emblem at the entrance to Perryville for her Gold Award project. She is on the Honor Roll, member of National Honor Society, SADD, Sodality, Pep Club, Spanish Club, and is involved in many school and municipal band activities.
Lindsey Schaaf, daughter of John and Cathy Schaaf of Perryville, raised funds to pay for the planting of flowers in the shape of the Girl Scout emblem in Perryville for her Gold Award project. She is vice-president of Career Center Student Council, vice president of VICA, vice president of DECA and is on the A Honor Roll.
Amy Trapp of Perryville planned a Daisy Day for her Gold Award project. She is the daughter of Sharon and John Trapp. She was a member of the first All-Conference basketball team at Perryville High School, received honorable mention in all-district, played volleyball, softball, belongs to Student Council, and is vice-president of her class.
Cori Welland, daughter of David and Linda Welland, belongs to Student Council, National Honor Society, FBLA, Senior Advisory Committee, Varsity Club, cheerleading, concert choir, yearbook, and Who's Who Among High School Students. Her Gold Award project was painting messages and information on the walls of the junior high school.
Planning activities for an all-night lock-in for SADD was Amy Winkler's Gold Award project. She is the daughter of Wayne and Brenda Winkler of Perryville. Her memberships include SADD, Sodality, Pep Club, and the band as the drum major. She also earned a spot on the school honor roll.
Kristen Werne is a member of Troop 258. She is the daughter of Dr. Joseph and Patricia Werne of Cape Girardeau. She is a member of marching and concert band, Spanish club and pom pon. She had earned a spot on both A and B honor rolls. She co-directed Cape Day Camp in 1994 as her Gold Award project. Patricia Werne is leader of Troop 258.
Tricia Keller of Cape Girardeau is the daughter of Keith and Vicki Keller. Her activities include senior class president, National Honor Society, Who's Who Among High School Students, cheerleading captain, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Letterman's Club, Girls' State and Young Life. Vicki Keller and Pat Renard are the leaders of Troop 268.
Susannah Gillan is the daughter of Garth and Marlene Gillan of Cobden, Ill. She is active in SADD, concert choir, campus ministry, Spanish Club, and is a lifetime member of Beethoven Society for Pianists. Her Gold Award Project was to be the piano accompanist and choir member for Catholic Hispanic Community at Masses. She is a member of Group 2000, individual girl membership.
Members of the ceremony committee who planned Sunday's event are: Vicky Keller, chair, and Joy Baker, Trish Goehman and Connie Exler. Members of the Gold Award Support Team are Donna Ballman, chair, Wilma LeDure, Patsy Chandler, Barbara Slinkard, Mary Stewart and Sara Scheper.
