A 15-year-old female student was cited Monday for assault in connection with a fight on a Cape Girardeau School District bus at 3:43 p.m., said Sgt. Barry Hovis, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
The incident involved two girls, ages 14 and 15, Hovis said, and was sparked by an ongoing dispute between friends of the two girls.
One girl allegedly struck the other one over the head with a closed fist.
No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident, Hovis said.
Other students quickly intervened and separated the two girls, and the bus driver called for police assistance.
Two officers responded and issued a summons for assault to one of the girls, Hovis said.
The driver stopped the bus to quell the disturbance, stalling traffic for a short while in the 300 block of South Kingshighway.
School bus fights "happen from time to time," but aren't an everyday occurrence, Hovis said.
It's not unusual for the driver of the bus to request police assistance in settling things down, he said.
Cape Girardeau School District superintendent Dr. Jim Welker said the fight was an isolated incident.
