A girl was attacked by a Great Dane in front of a Cape Girardeau store Wednesday afternoon.

Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Selzer said the 9-year-old Cape Girardeau girl was attacked around 4 p.m. Wednesday in front of Big Lots, 210 S. Silver Springs Road.

The dog was one of two being walked by two people from Bell City, Mo., Selzer said. Both dogs were on harnesses with retractable leashes. Selzer said there are no summonses or charges against the dog owners. The dogs were leashed, and since the owners live outside Cape Girardeau, the dogs don't fall under the city's vicious dog ordinance.

The girl received serious injuries when one of the Great Danes bit her face, but those injuries weren't life threatening, Selzer said.

The dogs were new to these particular owners, Selzer said, and the dog that bit the girl was taken to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
