About 25 people signed up Saturday to become members of a new club called the Old Town Cape RiverWalkers, and a blues concert drew even more of a crowd in the first of a series of events designed to familiarize people with Old Town Cape.
The first "Walkin' and Rockin' in Old Town Cape" is an attempt to take advantage of existing resources, said Catherine Dunlap, director of the sponsoring Cape Girardeau Main Street program. "We always see people walking downtown."
Many people think Old Town Cape designates just the downtown area, but its boundaries extend from the Mississippi River west to West End Boulevard, and from the Shawnee Parkway north to North Street.
The walkers were given a map with 1-mile- 2-mile and 3-mile routes through Old Town Cape. The plan is to hold special events that are both fun and educational.
The headquarters for the Old Town Cape RiverWalkers is Grace Cafe at the corner of Themis and Spanish streets. The cafe will keep a log book where members of the club can record their miles.
Don Greenwood and the Water Street Blues Band performed at the corner of Broadway and Spanish streets from 11 a.m. to noon.
