TIPTONVILLE, Tenn. - A 3.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred at 5:38 a.m. today near Tiptonville caused no damage or injury but could be felt up to 40 miles away.
According to Gary Patterson, a geologist with the Center for Earthquake and Research Information in Memphis, Tenn., said that the town that felt the effects of the earthquake the most was Portageville, Mo.
"It was the kind of earthquake that didn't do enough to cause some damage," Patterson said. "Someone on a third-floor apartment was more likely to feel the earthquake than someone jogging down the road. The higher up, the more motion is amplified."
