CHAFFEE -- Only one race exists Tuesday for the Chaffee City Council: Ward 2 Councilman Ed Gauthier is vying for his third two-year term against Janet Sullivan.

Of the three other two-year council seats up for election, two incumbents, Bill Cannon of Ward 1 and Tom Cunningham of Ward 4, are unchallenged. Incumbent Marcus Lauck of Ward 3 did not file for re-election; so Danny Finley, 118 Gray, is running unopposed for Lauck's seat.

Gauthier, 43, said he believes he's done a good job on the council and wants to continue contributing to the long-range planning the city has undertaken, such as with street resurfacing and water and sewer improvements.

"A lot of that stuff hasn't been done for the last 16 years," he said, "and the last four years is really the first time we had a long-range plan and really pursued it."

He said he chairs a committee that is dealing with a computer system changeover for city hall, and he'd like to have the opportunity to see that through.

Sullivan said she has nothing special planned. She said she wants to be "a part of the running of the city."

"It's something I always wanted to do, but didn't have time for while the kids were young," said Sullivan, 48.

She is employed in quality control at Columbia Sportswear. Gauthier owns Kinderhaus Day Care in Chaffee.
