The Cape Public School Foundation is fundraising for a new gymnasium scoreboard and several other items for Central High School, according to a report given by vice president Kyle McDonald at Monday night's Cape Girardeau School Board meeting.

Amy McDonald, executive director of the foundation, is raising funds to replace the scoreboard and the message board in the school's gym, Kyle McDonald said.

He said the scoreboard and message board have been ordered through Daktronics.

School district superintendent James Welker said the foundation is responsible for raising funds for the scoreboard at the high school stadium, as well.

The Richard D. Kinder Performance Hall also will receive a Steinway piano and new sound shells, meant to improve acoustics. Welker said the district hopes to receive these as soon as possible.

Welker said the current sound shells were old and the performance hall didn't have a nice piano.

The annual Penguin Party, one of the larger foundation fundraisers of the year, is scheduled for Feb. 8. It will include dinner, a live and silent auction and a band. Tickets are $50 per person.

  • The board held a closed session before the open meeting began at 6:06 p.m. and then reconvened into another closed session after the open meeting. Welker indicated the session pertained to personnel, but cited the authority to withhold any announcement for 72 hours.
  • Learned about an upcoming Missouri School Boards Association Fall Regional Meeting set for Nov. 6 at Oak Ridge High School. The title of the meeting is "Tax Cuts in Missouri: The Battle Continues." According to an association video shown at Monday night's meeting, it's believed the state tax cut issue will be back on the agenda for the 2014 Missouri legislative session.

House Bill 253, the tax cut bill, was vetoed by Gov. Jay Nixon and the Legislature failed to override the veto during a special session in September.

  • Recognized four teachers who were named Educator of the Year by the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 15. They were Heather Fisher, a kindergarten teacher at Blanchard Elementary; Mary LeGrand, a math specialist and central studies teacher at Central High School; Julie Stausing, who has taught English, mythology and creative writing at Central High School; and Ellen Pannier, a biology and honors anatomy teacher at Central High School. Each received a Crystal Apple Award, a $500 check, a resolution of honor from the Missouri Legislature and a commemorative video.
