Walkers will raise money for the Cape Girardeau Senior Center Saturday at the first Miles for Meals walk-a-thon.
The Miles for Meals program will support congregate and home-delivered meals for the elderly in Cape Girardeau. Similar walk-a-thons are being held at more than 300 centers across the state.
The walk-a-thon is part of National Older Americans Month. The honorary chairman is Lt. Gov. Roger Wilson. The statewide goal is for 6,000 walkers to raise $500,000.
In 1994, 3.8 million meals were home delivered. Another 3.45 million meals were served at centers like the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. More than 150,000 Missouri senior citizens took part in these programs.
The local walk-a-thon will start at 8:30 a.m. at the senior center, 921 N. Clark, where sponsor sheets are available. Door prizes will be awarded. For more information, call 335-1352.
