A Fruitland family's home was destroyed by fire Friday evening. Traffic was blocked and onlookers were kept some distance away as firefighters fought the blaze and examined the structure.

Chief Shane Johnston of the Fruitland Fire Protection District said the blaze appeared to have started in the garage at 181 Kyle Drive.

"It has been chaos," he said. "When I first pulled up on scene, it was pretty well engulfed."

None of the residents was reported to be injured, but their names were not available from fire officials.

Extra water tank trucks and personnel arrived from East County and North County fire districts, Johnston said. A total of 35 firefighters were on scene.

The fire was largely extinguished by 8:30 p.m., but firefighters were still on the scene checking for hot spots.

The cause of the fire was still unknown as of late Friday, Johnston said. An investigation will likely be started today.
