After its April 16 closure, the former Fruitland Diner will reopen Thursday under new management, but its name is under contention.
Bobby and Krissty Steers started Fruitland Diner in September 2008 but no longer operate the restaurant at 5841 U.S. 61 in Jackson, or Bobby's Kitchen at 1015 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.
Marty and Julie Platz and Jerry and Julie Farrow have taken over management of Fruitland Diner. Bobby's Kitchen remains open under the management of the Platzes and the Farrows.
Julie Farrow said the menu and name of Fruitland Diner will not change but the hours and days of operation at the restaurant will now be 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The Farrows own the building and equipment.
"I can't comment further on the situation but Bobby's no longer here," Farrow said. "This community can't stand another name change, not this quick. Bobby's Kitchen will probably change its name."
Krissty Steers and her husband have upcoming court dates for lawsuits filed against them when they were involved with Fruitland Diner and Bobby's Kitchen. She said if another party were to operate under the Fruitland Diner name, that party would be committing an illegal act.
Jeffrey L. Spray, a lawyer with Bradshaw, Steele, Cochrane and Berens, represents the Steers.
"My client still owns the legal entity known as Fruitland Diner, LLC, but they presently do not have any intention of reopening Fruitland Diner at the previous location," Spray said in a written statement. "My client has not sold Fruitland Diner, LLC, nor authorized anyone to operate under this name."
