Extensive damage was reported in an early morning fire Friday to a two-story frame house at 1018 Independence. Firefighters responded at 1:21 a.m.
Fire department officials estimated the loss at $25,000 on the $40,000 two-family dwelling.
The fire department responded with four engines, one ladder truck and a utility vehicle with 23 firemen to the blaze. Firemen spent 3 hours and 17 minutes on the scene.
No injuries were reported.
The occupant of the upstairs apartment, where the fire began, was Heidi Brown.
The fire originated in a room where five people were sleeping, said the fire department. The apparent cause was the use of candles to light the apartment.
