FRESHMEN HONOR SOCIETY WELCOMES 95 MEMBERS

Southeast Missouri State University inducted 95 students into its Phi Eta Sigma Freshmen Honor Society chapter during a ceremony held in the University Center recently.

This was the 10th initiation ceremony held at the university. The Southeast chapter was founded in 1984. A reception honoring the new initiates also was held in the University Center.

"It is important to recognize students who have gotten off to an exceptional start at the university. These students show much promise and we like to recognize them at this point in their studies," said Alice Strange, faculty adviser to the organization.

Students invited to join Phi Eta Sigma must have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during their first semester or year of college. This year, approximately 150 students were eligible to join the chapter, with 95 opting to be inducted.

Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society that recognizes high scholastic achievement during the first year of college and offers leadership and scholarship opportunities. The organization was founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois. Today, the organization has more than 200 chapters nationwide.
