Pauline Fox, academic associate for personnel and budget in Southeast Missouri State University's provost office, has been named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for the 1993-1994 academic year.
The ACE Fellows Program, established in 1965, is designed to strengthen leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising faculty and staff members for responsible positions in college and university administration. Fox is one of 32 Fellows nominated by the president or chancellor of their institution and selected in this year's national competition.
"This is a real honor," Fox said. "I considered it an honor merely to be selected to be interviewed" as a Fellow candidate.
Fox, who also currently is director of academic assessment and a professor of economics, has served Southeast in a number of capacities since 1978.
She has served as assistant professor of marketing and formerly was assistant professor and associate professor of economics before earning full professor status. She served as chairman of Southeast's economics department from 1980 to 1982 and from 1985 to 1990.
Fox is the fourth ACE Fellow to be selected from Southeast.
Typically, each ACE Fellow is assigned for the year to a college or university president and chief academic officer, either at a host campus or at the home institution, to participate in administrative activities. Fellows attend three six-day seminars on higher education issues organized by ACE, read extensively in the field, produce an analytical report and engage in other activities to prepare them for leadership positions.
During the fall 1991 semester, Southeast hosted ACE Fellow Mary Hill of Bucknell University at Lewisbury, Penn., on its campus. Fox said she will be working with ACE staff during the next few weeks to identify the campus to which she would like to be assigned.
"I've been at Southeast for 15 years in a variety of different roles," Fox said. "I think this is a real opportunity to explore Southeast's strengths and weaknesses and how the university differs from another institution."
