Ugandan-born cleric named Archbishop of York

LONDON -- A Ugandan-born cleric who opposes gay priests in the Anglican church and is a foe of the war in Iraq was named Friday as the first black archbishop in the nearly 500-year history of the Church of England. The Right Rev. John Sentamu, 56, was appointed archbishop of York, the church's second-highest position after archbishop of Canterbury. Raised one of 13 children near the Ugandan capital, Kampala, Sentamu was an outspoken critic of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, which earned him a term in jail. In 1974, he spent several months under house arrest before leaving Uganda for Britain.

Ethiopian security forces release 336 detainees

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia -- Ethiopia has freed 336 prisoners seized in a crackdown after clashes with police over elections, officials said Friday. More people will be freed, government spokesman Zemedkun Teckle said, announcing that 336 were let go -- the first reported releases since the fighting broke out. The main opposition group, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy, has said up to 120 of its staff have been jailed. Ethiopia's main human rights group has said three of its members were arrested.

Ex-worker led assault on Cambodian school

SIEM REAP, Cambodia -- A man driven by a grudge against his former employer led an assault on an international school, taking dozens of children hostage and silencing a crying a Canadian boy by shooting him in the head. The 23-year-old allegedly persuaded three friends storm the school on Thursday. Prime Minister Hun Sen said the takeover was a lesson for his government, and pledged to upgrade the readiness of security forces.
