Four-legged victims of Hurricane Andrew are getting some relief also through the Humane Society of the United States.

Local Humane Society officials are planning to send a contribution. Individuals may join that effort or send donations directly to the national organization, said Nancy Richards, director of the local Humane Society.

"I think with any natural disaster you will have homeless animals just like you have homeless people," Richards said. "A lot of people who fled the area had to leave their pets behind. Many shelters around the area have collapsed."

Now, Humane Society officials are looking for ways to feed and provide shelter for these animals.

"I think it's probably a serious situation," she said. "These animals are homeless and hungry too."

Individuals interested in helping the animal victims of the hurricane may send donations to: Humane Society of the United States, Southeast Regional Office, 1624 Metropolitan Circle, Suite B, Tallahassee, Fla. 32308; or Humane Society of the United States, Gulf States Regional Office, 6262 Weber Road, Suite 305, Corpus Christi Texas, 78413.

Checks need to include a note that the money is for animal victims of the hurricane.

Those who wish to join the local effort may send a contribution to Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, P.O. Box 1034, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701 .
