The Cape Girardeau County University Outreach and Extension Council has elected eight people -- four incumbents and one previous member of the council -- for two-year terms. The Cape Girardeau County University Outreach and Extension Council has elected eight people -- four incumbents and one previous member of the council -- for two-year terms. Thirteen candidates had filed.

Those reelected were:

Shirley Birk of Jackson. She is engaged in farming operations and is interested in 4-H programs for youth and programs for senior citizens.

Opal Collins of Cape Girardeau. She is a retired teacher and is currently serving as council treasurer.

David Wichern of Jackson. He is a member of the Cape County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and has a degree in agribusiness.

Erna M. Phillips of Cape Girardeau. She is a retired registered nurse and has worked with Girl Scouts, 4-H and Teen Challenge.

Also elected were:

Dr. William Meyer of Cape Girardeau, who previously served on the council five years.

Jeff Gholson of Jackson, a farmer, a Farm Bureau Board member and member of Cape County Young Farmers.

Pamela Walther of Jackson. She assists with a family dairy farm and is a 4-H volunteer.

Paul Schnare of Cape Girardeau. He is owner of Sunny Hill Gardens and has been involved in the horticulture business 25 years.

Council members are volunteers responsible for maintaining the University Outreach and Extension Center at Jackson and for planning programs with the professional staff.
