Four in Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department receive service awards

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department celebrated National Law Enforcement week Wednesday by honoring four of its staff with awards recognizing their performance.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John Jordan made the presentations at the justice center with county staff and the recipients' families.

Deputy Ron Hobeck, who suffered a stroke on duty several months ago, was given the Timothy J. Ruopp Award, the highest tribute to service the department hands out. The award is given in memory of Timothy J. Ruopp, a former Cape Girardeau County officer who was killed on duty while serving a department in California.

Hobeck began his career in Cape Girardeau County in 1986 and has remained a deputy in the patrol division.

Jordan also presented three the Copeland Excellence Award, an honor given by the department since 1995. An employee from each division was awarded -- Alan Nobels, a deputy in the patrol division, Jim Bartels, current supervisor of the bailiff division, and Brooks Brockmire, a sergeant in the jail division.

The Copeland award is given in honor of former Cape Girardeau County sheriff Norman Copeland, who served the department from 1986 until his retirement in 1994.
