All four people inside a burning Cape Girardeau home were able to escape the fire early Tuesday morning, according to a city fire department news release.
Firefighters received the call of a structure fire at 1105 Giboney St. at 4:23 a.m. from one of the home occupants' cell phones.
When firefighters arrived they saw smoke and fire coming from the building, according to the news release. The fire was under control within a half-hour.
No smoke detectors were found inside, where interior walls and a roof joist were heavily damaged, and smoke damage was pervasive.
The cause of the fire, which early estimates indicate caused about $60,000 in damage, was a stand-alone fireplace that was too close to a wall in the living room, the fire department reported.
