CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Four students from Cape Central High School earned honors in the VFW Voice of Democracy contest.
The contest was sponsored by VFW Post 3838.
Tanya Matzat won first place honors and received a $500 savings bond. Kyle Chasteen won second place and received a $250 savings bond. Mark Shoger won third place and received a $100 savings bond; and Scott Bryan won fourth place and received a $50 savings bond.
Matzat advanced to the district competition, but did not advance farther.
The local competition was open to all high school students in Cape Girardeau.
To enter, students wrote a speech not longer than three minutes which was then tape recorded.
Each year, the competition's theme is based on democracy. This year's specific theme was "Democracy: the Vanguard of Freedom."
