Four employees with the city of Cape Girardeau have been issued summonses by Cape Girardeau County for misdemeanor charges of receiving stolen property, according to Cape Girardeau Police Department public information officer Darin Hickey.
A city employee came forward and notified police of improper activity by city employees, and the police department opened an investigation, Hickey said. Police found the four employees had allegedly been taking city property, including signs and batteries, to a local scrap yard, dividing the money among themselves and pocketing it.
The local scrap yard cooperated in the investigation.
"The scrap yard didn't do anything," Hickey said. "They just scrapped the metal and batteries."
The "improper activity" had been going on for a while, Hickey said.
City officials could not be reached for comment Saturday.
