Four Beef Seminars on reproduction, minerals, vaccines and intensive grazing will be presented today during the New Trends in Agriculture show which starts at the Show Me Center on Southeast Missouri State University campus.
Dr. Monte Kerle, a University of Missouri Nutritionist, will discuss farm research on mineral uses in beef cattle and if certain minerals like copper, selenium and others have affect on reproduction and what producers have to look for in minerals.
To make a profit the first priority is high reproductive efficiency and calves on the ground. Dr. David Lahmman, State Beef Specialist, University of Missouri, will discuss nutrition, calving early, breeding techniques and new approaches on getting cows and heifers bred.
Tom Saxe, Livestock Specialist with the University of Illinois, will discuss the do's and don'ts of intensive grazing and show results of several trials that have been used in Illinois the last few years. Insight into which grasses, legumes and programs work will all be discussed. Local producers will also be on hand to discuss what they have learned and saw in their grazing programs.
Dr. William Wolft, DVM, University of Mo. Field Veterinarian will discuss why vaccines do not work and what can be done to make them effective. The vaccines are a useful tool in controlling disease, but sometimes fail to work because of various reasons including injection site, doing too much at one time or not using proper procedure.
