A choral concert, art exhibit, dance performance, instrumental ensemble and academic demonstration were rolled into one Saturday night at R.O. Hawkins Junior High.

Two gymnasiums' worth of student talent was the impetus for learning more about the Jackson R-2 School District Foundation during the organization's first winter showcase.

Students of all ages from more than 20 school performing/visual arts groups and extracurricular clubs took part in the showcase.

"Our first goal was to introduce you to the outstanding talent in the district and our second goal was to introduce you the foundation's mission," Dale Rauh, vice president of the foundation, told the audience.

Among the groups performing were choirs from several schools, a jazz band, the high school drama club, Spear It Dancers and percussion ensemble.

Representatives from student clubs such as Future Farmers of America and Future Business Leaders of America presented programs on their organizations.

Dr. Sam Duncan, who helped organize the event, said around 750 people attended.

"This is about awareness. It's basically to get the word out that the foundation does exist," Duncan said.

Jackson's foundation is an independent not-for-profit organization that formed in 2002 and is led by a seven-member board of directors.

The foundation currently provides funding to four main programs: Student activity, for students who cannot afford to participate in national competitions or special academic summer camps; a scholarship program for graduates; a grant program for teachers and other staff; and a capital projects campaign for major equipment purchases.
