A former professor at Southeast Missouri State University was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award for his work in graphic arts education.
Robert L. Cox of Cape Girardeau received the Frederick D. Kagy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this month during a conference in Williamsport, Penn. The conference was sponsored by the International Graphic Arts Education Association and was held at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
The award is named for Fred Kagy, a man who wrote a textbook that introduced students to graphic arts and developed a university program in printing technology education.
Cox began his career at high schools in Kansas and owned B & B Printing Co. in Chanute, Kan., before coming to the university.
While at Southeast, he instituted the printing and duplicating service at the university in 1964. He served as a chairman of the Department of Industrial Technology for six years. He retired from the university in 1991.
Cox held several elected positions with the international graphic arts association over the years, including secretary, first- and second-vice president and president.
He received the Elmer G. Voit Award from the Educational Council of the Graphic Arts Industry in 1982, the Fred J. Hartman graphic arts award in 1989, a distinguished service award from the Industrial Arts Association of Missouri and from Southeast Missouri District Industrial Arts.
Cox's dedication to the industrial and graphic arts industry and his enthusiasm are attributed as reasons for the lifetime achievement award, according the association.
He served as a visiting professor at the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, Iowa, from 194-95 and is now an adjunct professor at Murray State University in Murray, Ky.
An ordained deacon in the Baptist church, Cox has served as minister of music at Illmo Baptist Church in Scott City and Red Star Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.
He and his wife, Betty, have three sons.
