INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Former president Bill Clinton has been chosen as the next recipient of the Harry S. Truman Public Service Award.

The award, given annually by the city of Independence, will be presented May 6 on the front steps of the Truman Library in the Kansas City suburb.

Independence Mayor Don Reimal said Clinton is being honored for his public service before, during and after his presidency.

The mayor said that since Clinton left the presidency, he has helped various international initiatives involving the fight against AIDS and climate change. Reimal also noted Clinton and former President George H.W. Bush's efforts to spur relief after the Southeast Asia tsunami of 2004.
