A former Hayti police officer was arraigned Thursday in federal court, accused of hitting another man with his police-issue baton. On April 25, a federal grand jury indicted George Nettleton, 28, on a civil rights violation charge. A former Hayti police officer was arraigned Thursday in federal court, accused of hitting another man with his police-issue baton.

On April 25, a federal grand jury indicted George Nettleton, 28, on a civil rights violation charge.

According to the indictment, on Aug. 28, Nettelton intentionally struck John Skinner "several times in his back and arm with a dangerous weapon ... resulting in bodily injury."

If found guilty of the charge, Nettleton faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A trial date has not been set.

The name of the alleged victim was not released.
