U.S. Navy Commander M.G. "Gus" Lorberg III, a Cape Girardeau native, recently received a military award on his departure from a three-year tour in Stuttgart, Germany.
He was presented the Defense Meritorious Service Medal by RADM L.W. Smith Jr. at a ceremony held in the Operations Directorate, U.S. European Command Headquarters. As the U.S. military representative to NATO exercise planning in the Mediterranean, he was cited for his contributions to the development of realistic training in an environment characterized by dynamic change.
A graduate of Cape Central High School in 1969, Lorberg received a bachelors degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1973. After designation as a naval aviator and a tour flying P-3 aircraft the Pacific, he earned a masters degree from the Naval postgraduate school in 1980. Other tours have included Korea; Corpus Christi, Texas; and Barbers Point, Oahu, Hawaii.
He is married to the former Margaret Anne Doyle of Dublin, Ireland. They are currently residing in Pensacola, Fla., where Lorberg is serving the Chief of Naval Education and Training as the voluntary education program manager.
