Former Cape Girardeau County sheriff wins $50,000 lottery payout

Former Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Ivan McLain won a $50,000 payout last week, the Missouri Lottery announced Thursday.

McLain won the prize playing Show Me Cash, a game in which players select five numbers in hopes of winning a minimum of $50,000 in a daily drawing. McLain purchased his ticket at Huck's Food Store, 353 S. Kingshighway.

In a news release issued by the lottery, McLain said he selected his numbers after purchasing a computer-selected set. To get his numbers, McLain said he subtracted one from each of the numbers chosen on his Quick Pick play. "I've had so much trouble with my numbers being one off," McLain said in the release.

McClain, 79, was sheriff of Cape Girardeau County from 1966 to 1977. He was also a Cape Girardeau police officer in the 1950s and early 1960s, and police chief of Chaffee, Mo., until his resignation in 1991. He works as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Cape Girardeau.

McLain told lottery officials he plans to pay income tax and pay off his home with the prize.

McLain was the 37th jackpot winner in the Show Me Cash game since it began Sept. 8, the lottery reported.
