James Tilley, an engineer who was the city's chief construction inspector for more than 25 years, died Sunday at his home in Alabama. He was 66.

Tilley handled the city's role in overseeing construction from 1975 until his retirement in 2001. He returned to work part time for the city during the summers until 2005.

The man who now holds Tilley's old job, John Landewee, said the two worked together for many years. He recalled Tilley as a quiet man who did his job well.

"He had a good sense of humor," Landewee said.

Doug Leslie, recently retired himself after a 19-year career with the city that included time as director of public works and city manager, also recalled Tilley as a soft-spoken man.

"He was a real dedicated employee," Leslie said. "He worked on a number of projects, including the Lexington Avenue project, and got along well with folks."

Tilley is survived by his wife, Patricia Tilley, two sons and a daughter. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Chapel. A complete obituary can be found on page 7A.
