ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Foreclosures continue to rise, and the problem is getting worse in the St. Louis area.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Thursday that foreclosures rose 52 percent in the city last year, to 2,593. They were up 32 percent in St. Louis County, to 3,760. The Public Policy Research Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis figures show it was the second straight year of double-digit increases in both the city and the county.
The trend is continuing this year. For the first two months, foreclosures in St. Louis County are up about 32 percent, to 721.
Lenders, government officials and others close to the situation say they don't expect things to get better any time soon.
