The Southeast Missouri State University Cultural Programs Committee will present a performance by flutist Paul Thompson today at Old St. Vincent's Church.
The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
Accompanist for the evening of music will be pianist Beverly Reece.
The duo will present a varied program of works for flute from the 1700s through the 1980s. Works will range from jazz and blues to Indian ragas and romantic lyricism. Composers Georg Phillip Telemann, Frank Martin, David Heath and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be represented in the evening's performance of unaccompanied solos and virtuoso pieces.
Admission to the concert is free. Donations will be accepted.
Thompson, born in Manchester, England, has received degrees from the London College of Music and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Institute of Chamber Music. He has been awarded a French government scholarship for studies with Alain Marion, professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire.
Thompson currently teaches music courses at Southeast Missouri State University and flute at Murray State University in Kentucky. He previously has taught at the London College of Music Junior School, Colgate University, Cornell University and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.
Reece has completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree in music from Southeast Missouri State University and plans to pursue a master's degree in music. She is a studio arranger and player, and privately teaches piano, violin and theory. She also plays jazz and pop piano in clubs and is the choir director and organist for the Evangelical United Church of Christ.
