After a morning of storms and heavy downpours, Wednesday could be drying up.

The National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky. canceled a flash flood watch for today that included all of Southeast Missouri and parts of Southern Illinois and reported that the "heavy rain [has] exited the area with only light rain in its wake."

The National Weather Service also said that additional storms are possible over the next several days.

Neither the Missouri Department of Transportation nor the Cape Girardeau County Highway Department reported any flood-related road closures in the Southeast Missourian readership area as of Wednesday morning.

The rain did cause the Cape Splash water park in Cape Girardeau to delay its opening until 1 p.m. Further west, flash flooding was reported in south-central Missouri, and is blamed for at least one death. Gov. Jay Nixon also called in the Missouri National Guard to help in affected areas.

The Missouri Department of Transportation closed sections of Interstate 44 south of Rolla and U.S. 63 in Maries County after about 6 inches of rain fell Wednesday morning. Several homes were evacuated in the Phelps County town of Newburg.
