Five-vehicle pileup kills two in Ste. Genevieve County

NEW OFFENBURG, Mo. -- Two people were killed Monday in a five-car pileup in Ste. Genevieve Count.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the victims as Donald Lewis, 69, and Virginia Lewis, 63, both of Sullivan.

The accident happened at Missouri Highway 32 and Route O while an eastbound Mitsubishi Eclipse was stopped to make a left turn, with a pickup truck waiting behind it, the patrol said.

When the driver of the truck realized a tractor-trailer was not going to be able to stop in time, she tried to go around the right side of the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The tractor-trailer hit the left rear of the pickup truck, before the rig crossed the center line and hit the Buick Park Avenue the Lewis' were in head-on, the patrol said.

The rig then hit the rear of the Mitsubishi Eclipse.
