Five Southeast Missouri State University students received awards this week at the annual Art Students Juried Assessment Exhibition. The students are Michelle Buehler, Julie Bruce, Margaret Dement, Robert Friedrich and Stephanie Mueller. The awards were presented at an opening reception April 1.
Buehler, a senior from Perryville, received the "Best in Show" honor for her painting, "Uriel's Flight."
Bruce, of Cape Girardeau, received the "Distinguished Merit Award" for her drawing in charcoal, "Torso."
Dement, a senior from Sikeston, received both the "Merit Award in Graphic Design" for her "Book of Type" and the "Merit Award in Drawing/Printmaking" for her drawing, "Perry."
Friedrich, a senior from Jackson, received the "Merit Award in Sculpture/Fine Crafts" for his welded metal sculpture, "Rectangles in Repetition."
Mueller, a senior from Cape Girardeau, received the "Merit Award in Painting" for her oil painting, "Inside Cucurbitaceae."
Each year art majors and students at Southeast submit their creative works to a juried competition hoping to have them selected for exhibition at the University Museum. Works are judged by an impartial, professional artist, who selects about 40 of the almost 200 entries for exhibition.
