Timothy B. Galloway, 20, of St. Joseph, was in fair condition at Southeast Missouri Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said late Monday afternoon.

The four other people injured in the accident were all treated and released from the hospital, said the spokesperson. Cape Girardeau Police identified the victims, all of St. Louis, as the driver, Timothy Poe, 19; and passengers Jeffrey Christnell, 20; Andrew P. Speropoulos, 19; and James D. Michels, 17.

What exact injuries were suffered by the victims were unavailable from police. But police said Galloway suffered a disabling injury.

Both Speropoulos and Michels sustained evident but not disabling injuries, while Poe and Christnell received probable injuries, said police.

The accident happened about 2:50 a.m. Sunday at Broadway and Sprigg. The police vehicle was driven by Officer Aaron D. Burdine.

Police said Burdine had been responding to an emergency assistance call. The vehicle, headed west on Broadway, struck the vehicle driven by Poe, headed north on Sprigg, when it pulled into the officer's path.

Poe had to be cut from the wreckage, police said.
