JONESBORO, Ill. -- Illinois State Police believe Tuesday's dense fog was an aggravating factor in a head-on collision of two cars on Route 146 five miles west of Jonesboro.

At about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday an eastbound car driven by Richard Hale, 21, of Jonesboro, struck a westbound pickup truck driven by Gary Wayne Holtz, 35, of Chaffee, Mo. Both vehicles were riding the center line, police said.

Hale and Holtz both received serious injuries and were transported to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Also injured were Cynthia Hale, 21, of Jonesboro, her 6-month-old daughter Danielle Hale, and Daniel Adams, 8, of Grand Tower.

Police said all of the adults were wearing seat belts. Adams, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car. The baby was in a child-safety seat, but the chair was not secured to the car seat, police said.
