DELTA -- Five Cape Girardeau County residents were seriously injured in a head-on collision late Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Thomas Schreckenberg, 21, of Leopold, was westbound on Route N eight miles north of Delta when he fell asleep at the wheel.

He collided head-on with an eastbound car driven by Kathy Hendrix, 34, of Chaffee. Hendrix and her three children, Michael, 9, Rachel, 7, and Steven, 5, all sustained serious injuries and were taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital. All were in stable condition Tuesday night.

Schreckenberg also was taken to Southeast, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
