The Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation Department and the Breakfast Optimists Club will sponsor the third annual fishing derby at Capaha Park on Saturday.
The derby is open to kids age 5 through 16 and begins at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
The derby is free and is meant to introduce kids to fishing as a hobby, said Scott Williams of the parks department.
"It's gives kids who haven't fished before a chance to learn how, and it gives the ones who know how to fish a chance to compete," Williams said.
Awards will be given for the smallest and largest fish caught in each age group and attendance prizes will also be awarded.
Williams said about 50 to 100 kids usually participate in the derby each year.
Free orange juice will be provided in the morning and hot dogs and soda will be provided when the derby ends at around noon.
Participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment, but bait will be provided, Williams said.
