The first "Paw Crawl" walk-a-thon will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at Arena Park.

The fund-raising event is sponsored by the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.

The 1 1/2-mile walk will begin at 10 a.m., with registration at 9 a.m. Canine companions on leashes are welcome if the owner provides proof of up-to-date vaccinations.

Participants can register to walk as either an individual or a team. Businesses can sponsor a "rest station," which includes providing volunteer workers and water for the walkers.

The preregistration fee is $10 a walker, and registration the day of the walk is $12. The fee includes lunch provided by the Pasta House and Subway and a Paw Crawl T-shirt.

Prizes will be awarded for the highest amount of pledges raised and for the most pledges signed up. Pledge forms are available at the shelter.

Trainer Carla Karr will teach a 30-minute class in dog obedience basics after lunch.
