Area firefighters battled a Fruitland blaze for 11 hours Sunday morning.

Twenty firefighters from the Fruitland and East County fire protection district responded to a fire on County Road 607 west of Highway V around 1 a.m. A hay pile containing 300 bales was fully engulfed near two buildings, according to a Cape Girardeau County Firefighters Association news release.

Firefighters fought the blaze until almost noon Sunday and protected the buildings, the news release said.

This was one of several fires over the past several years where round bales have been in very large piles and placed closer than 200 feet from a structure, according to the release.
