A firefighter was injured slightly during a fire that destroyed a home in Scott City.

Just after noon Sunday, firefighting crews from Scott City, Cape Girardeau, Chaffee, and the NBC Fire Protection District were called to the 1200 block of East Maple Street in Scott City to respond to a structure fire.

The Scott City Police and North Scott County ambulance district also were called to the scene.

One Scott City firefighter was injured during the incident when the flue from the building’s wood stove collapsed. The man was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center, treated and released.

“It was just moderate, minor injuries,” Scott City fire chief Jay Cassout said. “He’s back at work today.”

No other injuries were reported.

Dennis Blankenship, owner of the home, was seen surveying the damage Monday morning. He told a Southeast Missourian photographer he was in Illinois at the time of the fire.

The fire appears to have started in the bedroom, Cassout said. The cause is undetermined and not suspicious, and there will be no further investigation. Yellow caution tape surrounded the blackened structure, which was burned beyond repair.

“Really, the house is not too safe to go in and investigate thoroughly,” Cassout said. “It’s a total loss.”
