The Office of the State Fire Marshal/Division of Fire Safety has listed the fire that killed a Jackson woman Sunday as accidental and caused by smoking, communications director Mike O'Connell said in an email to the Southeast Missourian.
Fire Safety is assisting the Jackson Fire Department, which is the lead agency, O'Connell said in the email.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton identified the woman Sunday night as Sandra Riggins. He said an autopsy is scheduled for today. Jackson assistant fire chief Randy Davis said his department is still waiting for official reports from the fire marshal and coroner and has not received official word of the cause.
"That's what it looked like at the scene," Davis said.
Sunday, Clifton stated Riggins was born Oct. 5, 1952, but a death notice in today's newspaper lists her birth as Oct. 5, 1954. Riggins was born in Ironton, Mo. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Perryville, Mo. Burial will be private. Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville is handling arrangements.
