Cape Girardeau firefighters extinguished a fire about 9 p.m. Monday at the Taco Bell restaurant at 3039 William St.

The fire was contained to one exterior column about three feet from the ground just outside the eastern entrance to the restaurant, according to Taco Bell general manager Melissa Gardner.

Firefighters were at the scene for about 30 minutes, Gardner said.

The restaurant was closed for the rest of Monday night but should reopen Tuesday, Gardner said. She said the fire may have been started by a cigarette, but she does not suspect foul play.
