A single-family residence at 1340 Wayne St. in Cape Girardeau was moderately damaged by fire in the early hours Sunday morning.

According to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, two occupants suffered mild smoke inhalation but sustained no other injuries and did not require medical treatment.

The occupants were outside the residence before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were called to the scene when smoke was spotted coming from the main floor of the single-story residence. The fire had begun in a basement bedroom and was extinguished 10 minutes after the crews' arrival.

The residence sustained damage in the bedroom and smoke damage throughout.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined. Foul play is not suspected.
