FIRE IN VACANT HOUSE CAUSES HEAVY SMOKE OVER DOWNTOWN

Cape Girardeau firemen responded to a call late Sunday night at a vacant two-story house on the corner of North Frederick and Washington Street.

Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. when several people in the area called to report the fire. The house is located at 451 N. Frederick.

At about 10:45 additional firefighters were called to the scene.

Heavy smoke poured out of the house and blanketed the downtown area. Small flames were visible burning through the roof of the house.

No cause for the blaze was immediately apparent.
