A shed behind a downtown apartment complex was destroyed in an afternoon fire Friday.
Cape Girardeau firefighters responded about 4:30 p.m. and found the shed on fire, having damaged the neighboring Lorimont House buildings on North Lorimier Street. A power line was knocked down and in the rear yard of the apartment buildings. Firefighters knocked down the shed and extinguished the fire by about 5 p.m.
Inspector Ivan Lagrand thought the damage to the neighboring building should be contained to the exterior. He said the fire had not spread to the attic.
No one was injured, Lagrand said.
Kelison Hines, who lives in the southernmost building, said the fire scorched the corner of the building. She was able to get out of the building with her two German shepherds. The smoke created by the fire was extensive.
“At least we’re going to a bonfire later, and we won’t have to change,” she said.
Hines’ neighbors, Tashyla Lott, Andrel Dolphin and Bernadette Mansfield, said they were expecting smoke damage inside their home.
Lagrand said there is no reason to think the fire is suspicious at this point.
