Firefighters from four departments responded Monday to a blaze north of Whitewater on Route U.

"The house is basically a total loss," said Garry Moore, Whitewater fire chief. Firefighters from the Gordonville, Millersville and Leopold departments also responded.

There were no injuries. The homeowners were in St. Louis and the house was not occupied at the time, Moore said. The house, at 3939 Route U, was about 1,800 square feet and included a basement, he said.

The single-story home was engulfed in flames when firefighters reached the scene at about 2:30 p.m., he said.
